France- Gramat to Millau Viaduct

Millau Viaduct

We were very late leaving Gramat at around 12:45pm as Steven had some work to do. We had an enjoyable afternoon driving 182k through the French country side, the Dordogne and Midi Pyrenees past and small medieval villages heading South East toward the Mediterranee coast.

Rodez Traffic Jam

We drove quite slowly and stopped several times so did not get as far as we were expecting. We arrived at the Millau Viaduct around 6pm. Went to the bridge lookout and decided to stay in the Millau Viaduct motorway rest area.

The Millau Viaduct is a cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in southern France. Designed by the French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster, it is the tallest bridge in the world, with one mast’s summit at 343.0 metres (1,125 ft). It is the 12th highest bridge in the world, at 270 metres (890 ft)[1] high below the road deck.[2] The viaduct is part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Montpellier.
